2005 "Having a Cocktail at the Worlds Largest Cocktail Party"

Main Page >

Having experienced the Michigan Ohio State Rivalry several times first hand, the boys wanted to experience the other major College Football rivalries. Each fall, fans from Georgia and Florida converge on Jacksonville, Florida to renew an old and heated gridiron rivalry.  The game was first held in Jacksonville in 1915 in the teams' second meeting (won by Georgia 39-0).  The game has been held in Jacksonville every year since 1933, save for 1994 and '95 while Alltel Stadium was built.

While Jacksonville is technically a neutral site, it is located only 73 miles from Gainesville, home of the Gators; Athens, on the other hand, is 342 miles to the north.  While Georgia fans travel in droves to the game and sometimes seem to outnumber Florida fans in town on Friday night and in the parking lot, the crowd in the stadium is 50-50 as many Florida fans arrive the day of the game.

The game has become known as the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, as fans from both schools cut loose during the weekend.  The Jacksonville Landing is overrun with fans, mostly students, celebrating the night before and the night of the game.  Tailgating begins at Alltel hours before game time, as alumni and students alike consume as much alcohol as possible.  While the occasional fight does break out, the crowd is surprisingly peaceful, that was until Mike and Bone joined the Party !!
